Haas Mill · G-code
G73 High-Speed Peck Drilling Cycle
Pecks with a small retract to break the chip instead of pulling out of the hole. Faster than G83 for moderate depths.
What G73 does on a Haas mill
G73 feeds down by Q, backs off a small amount to break the chip, then continues. The tool stays in the hole between pecks, so cycle time is much shorter than G83.
The back-off distance comes from a setting on the control (Canned Cycle Delta Z). Use G73 for holes up to around three or four diameters in free-cutting materials; switch to G83 when chips need to be evacuated.

Chips are broken but not cleared. In deep holes or gummy materials they pack around the flutes and snap the drill. If it squeals, change to G83.

G73 questions
What is the difference between G73 and G83?
G73 breaks the chip with a small retract and stays in the hole. G83 retracts to the R plane every peck to clear chips completely.
