Haas Mill · G-code
G83 Normal Peck Drilling Cycle
Pecks by Q and retracts to the R plane every peck to clear chips. The go-to cycle for deep holes.
What G83 does on a Haas mill
G83 drills Q deep, rapids out to the R plane to clear chips, rapids back down to just above the previous depth, and feeds another Q. It repeats until Z is reached.
Instead of a fixed Q you can use I (first peck), J (amount to reduce each peck) and K (minimum peck), so pecks get shorter as the hole gets deeper and chip packing gets worse. P adds a dwell at the bottom of the final peck.

A Q that is too large on a small drill packs chips and breaks the drill. In tough material, start with a peck of about one drill diameter or less.

G83 questions
What does Q mean in G83?
Q is the incremental depth of each peck.
How deep should each peck be?
Roughly one drill diameter is a safe starting point. Reduce it in stringy or tough materials, or use I/J/K for diminishing pecks.
