G17 XY Plane Selection

Selects the XY plane for arcs, cutter comp and canned cycles. The default on a mill.

Updated · by Ethan Reynolds

What G17 does on a Haas mill

G17 tells the control that arcs, cutter radius compensation and drilling cycles work in the XY plane, with Z as the tool axis. It is the power-on default on a Haas mill and belongs in your safe-start line.

G18 selects XZ and G19 selects YZ. Those are used for arcs on the side of a part or for some 4th-axis work. Switching planes changes how I, J, K and the direction of G02/G03 are interpreted.

⚠ Watch out

If a previous program left G18 or G19 active and you skipped the safe-start line, your next XY arc will be cut in the wrong plane.
