G00 Rapid Positioning

Moves the axes at rapid traverse to a position. Used for every non-cutting move: approaches, retracts and repositioning between features.

What G00 does on a Haas mill

G00 moves the commanded axes at the machine's rapid rate. On a Haas the axes do not necessarily arrive at the same time, so the tool path between the start and end point is not guaranteed to be a straight line. Treat every G00 as "get there fast, don't care how".

G00 is modal (Group 01): it stays active until another motion code such as G01, G02 or G03 replaces it. Rapid speed can be reduced from the control with rapid override, which is the first thing to turn down when proving out a new program.

G00 format

AddressMeaning
X Y ZDestination (absolute in G90, distance in G91)
A BRotary axes, if equipped

G00 example program

G00 G90 G54 X0. Y0. (rapid to part zero in XY)
G43 H01 Z1. (pick up length offset, rapid to Z1.)

⚠ Watch out

Because the axes do not interpolate, a combined XYZ rapid can dog-leg into a clamp or vise jaw. Retract Z first, then move XY, then come down.

G00 questions

Is G00 always a straight line on a Haas?

No. Each axis moves at its own rapid rate, so the path can dog-leg. Separate Z moves from XY moves near workholding.

Is G0 the same as G00?

Yes. Leading zeros are optional, so G0 and G00 are read identically.
