G96 Constant Surface Speed On

S becomes surface feet (or metres) per minute. RPM rises and falls automatically as diameter changes.

What G96 does on a Haas lathe

In G96 the control adjusts RPM continuously so the cutting edge sees the same surface speed at any diameter. That gives consistent finish and tool life on facing and profiling.

Clamp maximum RPM with G50 before G96, and switch to G97 for drilling, tapping and threading on centre.

⚠ Watch out

Drilling on centre in G96 sends RPM to the G50 clamp because the diameter is zero. Use G97 for drills and taps.
